The charming village of Great Strickland lies in the Eden Valley between the breathtaking Cumbrian Fells in the West and the Pennines in the East sitting in pasture farming land on the east side of the river Leith. Only five miles south from the market town of Penrith and eight miles from Ullswater, Great Strickland is ideally located if you are searching for a dream holiday in the Lake District.

Ullswater

Great Strickland is only eight miles from Ullswater which is arguably the most beautiful lake in England. Ullswater is England’s second largest lake which boasts a number of activities and watersports to suit everyone’s tastes from sailing, kayaking, fishing trips and plenty more. Ullswater is popular for its incredible walking with nearby fells including Helvellyn which are suitable for a variety of walks from short amble to challenging hill walking. You will also find activities including cycling, rock climbing, horse riding and plenty more to keep everyone busy.

The surrounding areas of Ullswater also offer plenty to see and do. Towns and villages including Glenridding, Patterdale, Pooley Bridge, Shap, Watermillock and Howtown all have their own individual charm and character offering local shops, facilities and delicious places to eat and drink.

Penrith

The bustling market town of Penrith is popular with both tourists and locals in the Lake District. Famous for its array of specialist shops such as James & John & John Graham’s delicatessen dating back from 1793, Penrith is a shopping haven for those wanting a unique shopping experience.

The olde worlde pubs and inns also bring visitors in from far and wide searching for fine real ale, and with Penrith being close to Jennings Brewery in Cockermouth you will find many of the pubs serve this local bitter. All with their own charm, many of them offer live music and fantastic pub grub.

The imposing ruins of Penrith Castle are completely open to the public. In 1399 William Strickland, later to become Bishop of Carlisle and Archbishop of Canterbury built a stone wall to Pele Tower, which was then improved and extended over the next 70 years, becoming a royal fortress for Richard, Duke of Gloucester before he became King Richard III in 1483. The current ruins of Penrith Castle date from this time and are a hugely popular tourist attraction in the Lake District. The striking sandstone remains of the ‘Castle of the Kings’ is situated in the pleasant surrounding of Castle Park, on the southern edge of Penrith.

Walking

Great Strickland is the ideal base if you are looking for a holiday which enables you to fully appreciate the breathtaking beauty of the Eden Valley and the Lake District by enjoying some of the many walks available.

Cycling

Cycling through Eden’s amazing scenery is an exhilarating way to see more of what Eden has to offer and with routes available for families with traffic-free and back road rides, mountain biking routes up bridleways and upland tracks.

Shopping

If a spot of shopping takes your fancy you will be spoilt for choice.  Penrith is your nearest town, but you are within easy reach of the charming town of Keswick and for more extensive shop, you may take a trip out to Kendal or Carlisle.

For families

Great Strickland is a fantastic location to take your family with many attractions nearby including the popular Abbotts Lodge, Jersey Ice Cream farm with free indoor and outdoor play areas, Wetheriggs Animal Centre, the Bird of Prey Centre and even an Ostrich Farm.  There is also the famous Rheged Centre with pot painting and a play area and swimming pools at Penrith and Keswick.  Keswick is great for families too, with a small cinema and some very interesting museums.  However, often, families find fun in the simplest of activities in the Lake District – such as taking a fishing net to Ullswater, splashing in muddy puddles and spending time together in the beautiful countryside.

The village has a superb local pub ‘The Great Strickland Arms’ which serves good value, quality meals and prides itself on being warm and friendly.  The pub has a secluded garden area and a lovely front area which catches the sun in the evening.  Our guests particularly recommend the steak nights and curry nights! 

Great Strickland also has a children’s play area, just a few minutes walk from the cottage.  It’s ideal for keeping the children entertained and we provide a children’s badminton set and a soft football in the cottage which can be used at the park.

The local church is St Barnabus’ and was built in 1870-71 by George Watson of Penrith, using fine local sandstone and Stainton sandstone. The steeply pitched roof supports an elm framed bell turret.  A simple interior of pitch pine furnishings remains unaltered. This sensitively designed Victorian rural church is a complete period example – built on a low budget and using local materials.  The church has one stained glass window – ‘The Crucifixion’ by Shrigley and Hunt, in the East Apse.  The Churchyard is surrounded by beautiful farmland and thought provoking views.  Rabbits can often be seen hopping around in adjacent fields.

‘Just to say we enjoyed our second visit to Maple Cottage as much as the first one. It so so relaxing there and comfortable. We found plenty of things to do in the area, I especially enjoyed the visit to Acorn Bank for the herb garden. We were a bit cold when we had been walking in the gardens so I suggested we visit the mill at Little Salkeld which Rev David had recommended for the bread and cake. After the ‘hearty soup’ served with ‘door stops’ of that delicious bread I think we could have conquered Everest!  Sunday roast with all the trimmings at the Strickland Arms is such good value for money.  Thanks again.’ M & R Chipping, Preston

‘Hi Claire, just to say what a lovely holiday we had at Maple Cottage last week. We were blessed with some unusually warm weather for the time of year. Although we did get a bit windswept up at Alston, good job there was a good coffee shop for hot toasted crumpets! It was great being able to reserve a table at the the Strickland Arms for when [our family] came to visit, they loved  the cottage as well. Also, I had bought in ingredients for a chicken stir fry with the intention of using a large saucepan, we were cheering when we  found the wok. In fact there was nothing we could not find so it gets our vote as one of our all time favourites. Everything so comfortable & homely, hope to visit again if you will have us .
